The second Ghost Rider is Daniel 'Danny' Ketch, actually the brother of Johnny Blaze. For a short while, at least, until the next Ghost Rider appeared. After much struggling, Johnny managed to seal the spirit of Zarathos and live in peace. Both souls defied Mephisto, but eventually came to clash in who was to have control of the body. Unfortunately, Mephisto already bonded Johnny with the spirit of Zarathos, a vengeful demon (angel after the retcon) that he defeated in the past, turning him into the Ghost Rider. except Roxanne did a Big Damn Heroes and expelled Mephisto with The Power of Love.

Obviously, Mephisto demanded Johnny hold to his bargain and agree to become his slave. only to have him die in an accident during the very next stunt he performed. Mephisto upheld his bargain and cured Crash. That spell summoned Mephisto (though it has recently been retconned to be Lucifer who made the deal with Johnny), whom Johnny asked to cure Crash's cancer. Trying to find a way out of his impasse, Johnny turned to the occult and eventually learned of a spell that could summon Satan. Then, Crash revealed that he had cancer, but even then Johnny still refused. This caused Johnny to swear off motorcycling, and deteriorated his relationship with Crash as Johnny refused to take public stunts, preferring to train in the shadows. Until one event where Johnny slipped off on his motorcycle stunt training, costing the life of Crash's wife, a mother figure to Johnny. Due to the abandonment, Johnny tended to suppress the memory about them, so it would seem life would be good for him. His mother was alive, as well, but she abandoned him, taking away his brother Daniel and sister Barbara. He also became the fiancee of Crash's daughter Roxanne. A stunt motorcyclist who trained under his dead father's friend Craig 'Crash' Simpson. Blaze was the first version of the character to use the now-iconic motorbike and flaming skull. The Ghost Rider name was then re-used for a modern character, Johnathon 'Johnny' Blaze, who first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #5 (August, 1972). He was retroactively dubbed the Night Rider, and then the Phantom Rider. This character rode around on a white horse in an all-white getup. Marvel first used the Ghost Rider name for a Western hero named Carter Slade. The premise is basically: Badass Biker with a Flaming Skull for a Head. The extras include deleted scenes, a full-length director’s commentary, and an extended making-of documentary for those who just can’t get enough of Ghost Rider.Ghost Rider is one of the earlier thriller heroes of the Marvel Universe, as in, heroes that deal with underworld baddies like demons and the likes of Mephisto. And if you can overlook the obnoxious score (or like your action cues with a giant helping of heavy metal), the audio mix was appropriately vivid, spacious, and generous with its active surrounds and deep bass.

And while I preferred the movie in 2D, the 3D was effective without being overly gimmicky or distracting. The crisp, clean video transfer could hardly be bettered. But hell (or-inside joke alert-Mars) is not a happy meal.Īt least the movie looks and sounds great. And Ciarán Hinds as the devil looks constantly grumpy and uncomfortable as he ponders how his fortunes have changed since Rome. Idris Elba, who has been busy since we first noticed him in Thor, does the best he can to earn his pay. A scene in which he fights off turning into Ghost Rider is almost worth the price of rental. Nicolas Cage gobbles up more scenery than a giant termite in an exterminator commercial. The actors do their best to keep things at least modestly interesting. The movie is little more than a succession of action scenes strung together by a thin plot, running a mercifully short 95 minutes (although it seemed much longer).

But first he has to fight off a nasty band of kidnappers, including their rotter of a leader, who ends up as a zombie with power over darkness and decay.

When a rogue priest promises to free Johnny from the spell if he saves the boy from Lucifer’s clutches, he takes up the challenge.

Johnny’s pursuit of evil soon puts him at odds with his old helpmate Satan, who has spawned a son to take over the family business. His motorcycle has apparently sold its carburetor and tires to Beelzebub as well, since whenever Johnny goes all flames and stuff, he’s also treated to one hell of a ride. A bummer for sure, but everybody needs a hobby. In exchange, he periodically turns into an ancient, fiery demon that searches out evil to suck out its soul. From what I can gather from the character’s two films, 2007’s Ghost Rider and this sequel (I’m not a fan of the comics), Johnny Blaze is a motorcycle stunt rider who sells his soul to the devil to save his father’s life. As Marvel’s comic characters go, Ghost Rider is hellishly hard to categorize.
